Why Size and Length Matter

Choosing the right braid size and length is one of the most important decisions you'll make before your appointment. It affects everything — how long the install takes, how long the style lasts, how much it weighs on your head, and how versatile it is for different looks.

At Eva's African Hair Braiding Salon in Chandler, AZ, we walk every client through these choices during the consultation. But having a sense of what you want before you arrive saves time and helps you leave even happier with the result.

Braid Size Breakdown

Here's what each size looks like, how long it takes, and what kind of lifestyle it suits best:

Jumbo Braids

Sections: ~30-40 braids total
Install: 2-4 hours
Lasts: 4-6 weeks

Pros: Fastest install, bold statement look, lightweight per braid, trendy aesthetic

Cons: Shorter lifespan, less styling versatility, can look bulky in updos

Best for: Clients who want a quick install, love a bold look, or are trying braids for the first time without committing to a long appointment.

Medium Braids

Sections: ~80-120 braids total
Install: 4-6 hours
Lasts: 6-8 weeks

Pros: Most versatile, professional look, great balance of install time and longevity, easy to style in updos and ponytails

Cons: Middle ground — not as fast as jumbo, not as long-lasting as small

Best for: The majority of our clients. Works for every setting — corporate, casual, events. The most popular choice at our Chandler salon by far.

Small Braids

Sections: ~150-200 braids total
Install: 6-9 hours
Lasts: 8-10 weeks

Pros: Longer lasting, more movement and flow, most natural look for individual braids, extremely versatile for updos

Cons: Longer install time, heavier overall weight, more work to maintain

Best for: Clients who prioritize longevity and don't mind a longer appointment. Popular with clients who want their braids to look like natural hair from a distance.

Micro Braids

Sections: ~300-500+ braids total
Install: 8-12+ hours
Lasts: 10-12 weeks

Pros: Longest lasting of all sizes, most natural movement, can be curled and heat-styled, incredibly versatile

Cons: Very long install (often split over two sessions), most expensive, can be heavy, removal takes time

Best for: Clients who want maximum longevity and the most natural-looking result. Often chosen by clients in Gilbert and Mesa who want to minimize salon visits.

Choosing Length: What Are Your Options?

Braid length is measured from where the braid starts at your scalp to the tip. Here are the standard options we offer:

Shoulder length: Hits at or just past the shoulders. Lightweight, easy to manage, great for first-timers or clients who don't want braids in the way during workouts.
Mid-back: Ends between the shoulder blades. The most popular length overall. Long enough to look dramatic, short enough to stay out of the way.
Waist length: Falls at the natural waist. A classic, elegant look that offers maximum versatility for updos and half-up styles.
Hip length / extra long: Falls at or below the hips. A bold statement. Be aware this adds more weight and requires more careful handling to avoid tangling.

Arizona consideration: Longer braids can feel heavier in the summer heat. Many clients in Chandler opt for mid-back or waist length during summer and go longer in the cooler months when the extra coverage doesn't feel as warm.

How to Decide Based on Your Lifestyle

Your daily routine should heavily influence your size and length choice. Here's a quick decision framework:

Active / gym-goer

Medium or small braids, mid-back length. Easy to tie up during workouts, light enough to not overheat.

Corporate / professional

Medium braids, shoulder to mid-back length. Sleek, polished, and easy to style for meetings.

Student

Medium to small braids, waist length. Versatile for different looks, long-lasting to minimize time and cost.

Low-maintenance

Jumbo or medium braids, any length. Less braids means less sections to maintain and faster wash days.

Event / special occasion

Small braids, waist length. Maximum styling options for updos, curls, and accessories.

Does Face Shape Matter?

Face shape can influence which braid sizes and lengths complement your features best, though ultimately any style works if you love it. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Round face: Longer braids (mid-back+) elongate the face. Avoid very short shoulder-length braids that add width.
  • Oval face: Every size and length works well. This is the most versatile face shape for braids.
  • Heart-shaped face: Medium to small braids at shoulder or mid-back length balance a wider forehead.
  • Square face: Layered lengths and side parts soften angular features. Medium braids tend to complement best.
  • Long face: Shoulder-length braids with some volume balance length. Jumbo braids add fullness without extending the face.

These are guidelines, not rules. At our salon, we'll look at your features, hair density, and personal preferences together and recommend what we think will look best — but the final choice is always yours.

Cost Considerations

Size and length directly affect pricing because they determine install time and the amount of extension hair needed:

  • Smaller braids = more time = higher cost
  • Longer braids = more extension packs = slightly higher material cost
  • But smaller/longer braids also last longer — so the cost per week of wear can actually be lower

Check our braiding services page for current pricing based on size and length. We're transparent about costs so there are no surprises at checkout.
