Why Preparation Matters
Walking into your braiding appointment with properly prepared hair makes a significant difference in how the final style looks and how long it lasts. At Eva's African Hair Braiding Salon in Chandler, AZ, we see the best results from clients who follow a few simple pre-appointment steps.
Whether you are getting box braids, knotless braids, cornrows, or any other protective style, here is exactly what to do before your visit.
1. Wash and Condition Your Hair
Come to your appointment with clean, freshly washed hair. Ideally, wash your hair 1-2 days before your appointment. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup, then follow with a moisturizing conditioner. In Chandler's dry climate, extra moisture before braiding helps your natural hair stay healthy under the style.
Avoid applying heavy oils, butters, or leave-in products on appointment day. These can make the hair slippery and harder to grip, which affects how well the braids hold.
2. Detangle Thoroughly
Detangle your hair completely before arriving. Work through all knots and tangles using a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots. This saves time during your appointment and reduces any discomfort during the sectioning process.
If your hair is particularly tangled or matted, consider doing a deep conditioning treatment 2-3 days before to soften the hair first.
3. Blow Dry or Stretch Your Hair
For most braiding styles, stretched or blown-out hair gives the cleanest results. You do not need to flat iron your hair — a light blow dry on medium heat with a concentrator nozzle is enough. If you prefer not to use heat, you can stretch your hair overnight using the banding method or African threading.
Stretched hair allows for cleaner parts, smoother braids, and a more uniform finish. This is especially important for styles like knotless braids where a smooth root blend is key.
4. Bring Reference Photos
Save 2-3 reference photos of the exact style you want on your phone. Show your stylist the length, size, color, parting pattern, and any finishing details you prefer. This eliminates guesswork and ensures you and your braider are aligned from the start.
At Eva's, we encourage clients to share inspiration photos during the consultation at the beginning of the appointment. The more specific you are, the happier you will be with the result.
5. Eat and Hydrate Before Your Visit
Braiding appointments can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours depending on the style. Eat a full meal before arriving and bring a water bottle. Staying hydrated and comfortable helps you sit patiently through longer styles like small box braids or micro braids.
You are welcome to bring snacks, your phone charger, headphones, or anything else that helps you relax during your appointment at our Chandler salon.
6. Know Your Desired Length and Size
Before your appointment, decide on the braid size (jumbo, medium, small, or micro) and length (shoulder, mid-back, waist, or hip length). Each combination affects the install time and how long the style lasts. If you are unsure, your stylist can recommend the best option based on your hair type and lifestyle.
7. Plan for Parking and Arrival
Our salon is located at 950 E Pecos Rd Suite 11 Room 28, Chandler, AZ 85225 in the Pecos Marketplace plaza. There is ample free parking. Arrive 5-10 minutes early so we can start on time and finish within the estimated window.
