The Most Common Question We Get
“Should I get knotless braids or regular box braids?” — this is easily the most frequently asked question at our Chandler salon. Both styles look similar from a distance, but the installation technique, comfort level, and maintenance are quite different.
Here is an honest breakdown from our braiders who install both styles daily for clients across Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, and Mesa.
What Are Box Braids?
Traditional box braids start with a small knot at the base where extension hair is wrapped around your natural hair. This creates a firm, secure anchor that holds the braid in place. The knot is what gives box braids their defined, structured root appearance.
What Are Knotless Braids?
Knotless braids start with your own natural hair and gradually feed in extension hair as the braid progresses. There is no knot at the root, which creates a flatter, more natural-looking base with significantly less tension on the scalp.

When to Choose Box Braids
Choose traditional box braids if you prefer a more structured, defined look at the root and want a slightly shorter install time. Box braids also tend to hold tighter for longer, which some clients prefer for very active lifestyles or if they wash their braids frequently.
They are a great choice if you have thick, coarse natural hair that can handle the tension of the knot without irritation.
When to Choose Knotless Braids
Knotless braids are the better option if you have a sensitive scalp, thin or fine edges, or if you experience headaches from traditional braids. They are also more popular among first-time braiding clients in Chandler because the install process is gentler and the result looks more seamless.
Many of our clients in the East Valley specifically request knotless because they prioritize comfort and a natural-looking hairline.
Arizona Climate Consideration
In Chandler's dry heat, both styles perform well. The lack of humidity means less frizz for both options. However, knotless braids allow slightly better airflow to the scalp, which can feel more comfortable during Arizona's summer months when temperatures exceed 100°F.
